Wheelie : 2-Wheeler Rental App for College Campuses

Wheelie is a conceptual 2-wheeler rental mobile application designed to address transportation challenges faced by students in large university campuses located on the outskirts of cities.

problem

Students in large university campuses in India often struggle with transportation: -Campuses are expansive, making walking impractical for daily commuting - Many private universities are located far from city centers - Common options like autos and cabs are expensive, even for short distances - Owning a two-wheeler is costly due to fuel, maintenance, and parking These challenges disproportionately affect students who rely on frequent, short-distance travel both inside and outside campus.

solution

Wheelie focuses on providing on-demand two-wheeler rentals tailored for students studying at large campuses (such as SRM University, Chennai). The app emphasizes affordability, accessibility, and ease of use, making short-distance travel more practical for students.

This project was inspired by my own experience as an undergraduate student. During my undergrad years, I often struggled with transportation around campus and while traveling into the city. While there were several two-wheeler rental shops located near the campus, discovering them was never straightforward. Most of the time, I only learned about these options through word of mouth-friends, seniors, or random recommendations.
Having personally faced these challenges, I felt that a simple, student-focused app that aggregated nearby two-wheeler rental options and allowed users to book easily could have made a real difference, not just for me, but for many students in similar environments. This realization became the foundation for Wheelie.

User Interviews

Key research questions included:

  • What modes of transport do you usually use for commuting?

  • What problems do you face when using existing transport options?

  • Do you own a two-wheeler? If yes, what challenges come with it?

  • Would you prefer renting a two-wheeler instead of owning one? Why?

Research Insights & Pain Points

From the research, the following pain points emerged:

  • Autos and cabs around campuses charge excessively, even for short distances

  • Free college shuttle services are limited and only operate between campuses

  • Owning a two-wheeler involves high maintenance and fuel costs

  • Students prefer renting, but lack access to reliable cycle/scooter rental options nearby
